SUMMARY:Invited Academic Seminar Series - Jennifer Lippincott-Schwartz
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nAdvances in mRNA-based imaging technologies are enabling unprecedented views of cellular architecture and dynamics. This talk will present two stories that employ synthetic mRNA to probe the spatial and temporal organization of living cells. First\, I will describe a generalizable system for in vitro-transcribed (IVT) mRNAs\, optimized for high translational efficiency across multiple cell types while reducing stress pathway activation. This platform\, termed mRNAbow\, supports simultaneous expression of multiple fluorescent proteins\, enabling multiplexed imaging in mammalian cells-including cancer lines\, iPSC-derived models\, primary cells\, and organoids-as well as in vivo contexts such as zebrafish embryos. In a different application\, MS2 and SUNTAG-based live-cell reporters were used to visualize mRNA dynamics and translation at single-molecule resolution. We find that translation of mRNAs encoding membrane and secretory proteins is enriched at endoplasmic reticulum (ER) junctions containing the structural protein lunapark and localized adjacent to lysosomes. These results reveal a coupling between ER organization\, lysosomal nutrient sensing\, and the localized synthesis of secretory and membrane proteins\, linking spatial cell architecture to translational control.

SUMMARY:Graduate Student Seminar Series - Cindy Natalia Molano Camargo
DESCRIPTION:Graduate Student Seminar Series\nPlease ensure you invite your Principal Investigator by adding their email via the ‘Add Guest’ button and they will also be notified of your presentation.\nLocation: 2nd Floor Auditorium (TRI/KITE) – 550 University Ave\nPresentation Title: Dynamic Visual Imagery for Shared Robotic Control via a Multiuser Brain–Computer Interface\nAbstract: Individuals with complex communication and motor limitations have achieved robot control using brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) through mental imagery paradigms. Specifically\, our lab has recently demonstrated the effectiveness of one type of intuitive mental imagery\, namely\, visual imagery\, for online BCI control. This investigation proposes to elucidate whether a novel dynamic visual imagery task\, i.e.\, imagined robot motion during a dyadic interaction\, elicits reliable machine-discernible electroencephalography (EEG) signals. To address this question\, this research aims to characterize the neural oscillatory processes between coupled brains of adults via shared\, dynamic visual imagery-based control of robot-mediated trials in an EEG-based hyperscanning setup\, and to validate the performance of the dynamic visual imagery based-multiuser BCI in terms of accuracy. This research extends the literature on dynamic visual imagery as a cognitive process for supporting shared environmental interaction through dyadic endogenous neural activity via assistive multiuser BCIs.\nSupervisor Name: Professor Tom Chau\nYear of Study: 5\nProgram of Study: PhD\nPowered by Calendly.com

SUMMARY:PhD Open Defense - Angelico Raphael Obille
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: While it remains challenging to engineer strong\, biocompatible adhesives that are effective in wet conditions\, many aquatic organisms have evolved strategies to adhere to surfaces underwater. Zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) and quagga mussels (Dreissena bugensis) are freshwater bivalves that use a proteinaceous structure called the byssus to permanently attach to diverse surfaces. Although superficially similar to the marine mussel byssus\, the Dreissenid byssal system evolved in freshwater conditions\, resulting in a unique\, and understudied\, biochemical profile. Understanding the mechanism of byssal adhesion employed by Dreissenids offers potential new insights for the development of bioinspired adhesive materials. The objective of this thesis is to identify and functionally characterize Dreissenid adhesive proteins that directly interface with adherend surfaces. Localization via quantitative proteomics of quagga mussel byssal proteins revealed a set of 20 putatively adhesive footprint proteins. Among these was Dbfp7\, a highly expressed small polymorphic protein that was shown to exhibit adhesive ability in aqueous conditions despite lacking significant amounts of 3\,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA). A sequence-reductive approach combined with atomic force nanomechanical mapping and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy revealed functional differences between domains of Dbfp7\, revealing sequences that encode adhesive properties. The identification and characterization of Dbfp7 expands the repertoire of known wet adhesive proteins\, furthers our understanding of freshwater bioadhesion\, and provides a new source of inspiration for the development of improved bioinspired wet adhesive materials for applications including medical adhesives.
