Presentation Title: Investigating Kinematic Changes in Gait Resulting from Repeated Low-Friction Walking on Icy Slopes
Abstract:
Icy conditions increase the risk of slips and contribute to injury-related hospitalizations in Canada. Although snow removal, de-icing, and slip-resistant footwear can reduce this risk, they cannot eliminate all hazards associated with winter walking.
Previous analysis of the WinterLab study showed that, after seven consecutive sessions of repeated ice walking, participants successfully negotiated steeper slopes and demonstrated systematic changes in anteroposterior and mediolateral shear forces. However, the kinematic adaptations underlying these improvements remain unknown. This study aims to investigate changes in gait kinematics resulting from repeated exposure to level, low-friction walking over seven consecutive sessions.
The findings may help explain previously observed improvements in icy-slope performance and identify trainable movement strategies that support safer winter walking.
