DESCRIPTION:Graduate Student Seminar Series\nPlease ensure you invite your Principal Investigator by adding their email via the ‘Add Guest’ button and they will also be notified of your presentation.\nLocation: WB116\nPresentation Title: In-Ear EEG Device for Auditory Brain-Computer Interface Communication\nAbstract:\nBackground – Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) enable communication using signals generated by the brain. Electroencephalography (EEG) is often implemented to non-invasively record these brain signals using scalp-based electrodes\, which are uncomfortable for long-term use and conspicuous. In-ear EEG devices address these limitations and can measure brain activity from within the ear canal. These devices can be implemented as auditory BCIs\, which use the brain signals evoked by auditory stimuli as a control method.\n Method – We designed\, constructed\, and piloted a portable in-ear EEG device using commercially available components to investigate the viability of an in-ear EEG device for auditory BCI control. Following REB approval\, 15 participants will attend one data collection session. Brain activity will be recorded throughout the trials using the novel in-ear EEG device\, and a Wearable Sensing DSI 24 EEG Headset for validation testing. The data collection session is composed of 4 components to evaluate device viability: (1) motion artifact acquisition\, (2) alpha wave acquisition\, (3) an auditory BCI paradigm involving auditory evoked potentials\, and (4) qualitative surveys to evaluate practical device characteristics.\n Results – Pilot sessions show the device can record and stream EEG data wirelessly in real-time for BCI control. \nConclusions – As auditory EEG BCIs have demonstrated potential\, we conclude that this novel in-ear EEG BCI device is a viable control method.\nSupervisor Name: Dr. Tom Chau\nYear of Study: 3\nProgram of Study: MASc\nPowered by Calendly.com

SUMMARY:Biomaterials for delivering on the promise of immunotherapy – Natalie Artzi
DESCRIPTION:Speaker\nNatalie Artzi\nAssociate Professor\nHarvard Medical School \n\nAbstract\nImmunomodulatory therapies have advanced to clinical trials over the past decade for the treatment of a range of diseases and disorders\, from cancer to diabetes to transplant rejection. However\, the efficacy of these therapies remains limited\, as challenges associated with off-target drug toxicity\, poorly controlled drug pharmacokinetics\, and an incomplete understanding of real-time therapy responses prevent effective therapeutic windows from being realized. Here\, we highlight some of our work on the design\, fabrication\, and characterization of biomaterial-based delivery technologies for the controlled delivery of immunotherapies and for the non-invasive monitoring of their associated immune responses for the treatment of cancer and autoimmune disease. We show that the design of materials and their delivery context can influence therapeutic outcomes and alter the spatiotemporal characteristics of the incited immunomodulatory responses. By adroitly designing and utilizing our material delivery platforms\, we can deliver immunotherapies with tailorable pharmacokinetics and enhanced efficiency to improve long-term therapeutic outcomes and tolerability\, and enable studying basic questions in immunobiology as we seek to generate a ‘living’ therapeutics. \n  \nBio:\nDr. Artzi is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard medical School. She is a Principal Research Scientist at MIT\, Associate Faculty at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering\, and an Associate Member of the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT. She completed her postdoctoral studies at MIT focusing on studying tissue:biomaterial interactions and designing smart biomaterials for therapy and diagnosis applications.  \nDr. Artzi is the recipient of multiple grants and awards\, including the inaugural Kabiller Rising Star Award in Nanotechnology and Nanomedicine\, the Acta Biomaterialia Silver Medal award\, One Brave Idea award\, Stepping Strong Innovator Award\, Controlled Release Society Young Investigator Award\, Mid-Career Award from the Society for Biomaterials\, Bright Futures Prize\, and the Massachusetts Life Science Center for women entrepreneurs. Dr. Artzi was recently inducted to the Controlled Release Society College of Fellows. \nCurrently\, Dr. Artzi directs multiple research venues aiming to integrate science\, engineering\, and medicine to rationally design personalized materials to improve human health\, and has co-founded a startup company\, BioDevek\, which develops the next-generation biomaterials to improve outcomes following internal surgeries. \n\nHost\nMolly Shoichet
