DESCRIPTION:Graduate Student Seminar Series\nPlease ensure you invite your Principal Investigator by adding their email via the ‘Add Guest’ button and they will also be notified of your presentation.\nLocation: 2nd Floor Auditorium (TRI/KITE) – 550 University Ave\nPresentation Title: Developing novel methods to assess respiratory signals in asthma-OSA overlap\nAbstract: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and asthma are highly prevalent respiratory disorders that frequently coexist and worsen one another\, partly due to airway narrowing and changes in intrathoracic pressure during sleep. Negative intrathoracic pressure generated during obstructive events may promote thoracic fluid shifts and small airway narrowing\, contributing to increased airway resistance and reduced lung reactance. This research investigates respiratory asynchrony between chest and abdominal motion as a noninvasive surrogate marker of negative intrathoracic pressure and examines its relationship with overnight changes in thoracic fluid volume and airway mechanics. In parallel\, this work evaluates the feasibility of textile-based wearable sensors for accurately and comfortably monitoring respiratory biomarkers\, with the long-term goal of developing a clinically applicable\, noninvasive system for assessing respiratory dysfunction in individuals with asthma and sleep apnea.\nSupervisor Name: Azadeh Yadollahi\nYear of Study: 2\nProgram of Study: MASc\nPowered by Calendly.com

Cell culture medium is comprised of hundreds of compounds\, consisting of required growth factors\, essential vitamins and minerals\, amino acids\, amongst others. As a result\, the search space for optimizing formulations becomes exceedingly large (for instance\, conducting a full screen for a medium composed of 100 factors at 6 possible dosage levels would require testing 6100 formulations!). In this research\, a novel algorithm is developed to address the issues that arise as more components are added to media.
