Presentation Title: Investigating Gait Adaptations from Repeated Exposure to Walking on Ice
Abstract: Slips on ice are a major cause of falls, yet practice-related gait adaptation on ice remains poorly understood. This study examined changes in slope-negotiation capacity and gait mechanics over seven consecutive sessions in 10 healthy adults. Maximum Reachable Slope Angle increased from 5.6 ± 2.0° to 8.4 ± 1.3° (p<0.001). Peak required coefficient of friction did not change significantly across level, uphill, or downhill walking. During level walking, normalized peak anteroposterior shear force decreased from 0.060 ± 0.025 to 0.023 ± 0.011 (p<0.001), while mediolateral shear force increased from 0.015 ± 0.006 to 0.035 ± 0.026 (p<0.001), with similar directional changes on slopes. Estimated walking speed decreased across sessions during level (p<0.02) and uphill (p<0.002) walking. These findings suggest that repeated exposure improved performance through gait reorganization rather than a simple reduction in overall friction demand.
