Five Mastercard Foundation Scholars Join University of Toronto’s Institute of Biomedical Engineering This Fall

The University of Toronto’s Institute of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is proud to welcome five exceptional Mastercard Foundation Scholars to its Master of Engineering (MEng) program this September. These scholars (from top left): Edwin Brobbey, Patrick Yeboah Bonsu, Gideon Owusu Boakye, Rosemond Nyatefe Tawiah, and Kwadwo Pobi Aning, bring with them a wealth of academic excellence, innovation, and a shared commitment to transforming healthcare across Africa.

The University of Toronto’s Institute of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is proud to welcome five exceptional Mastercard Foundation Scholars to its Master of Engineering (MEng) program this September. These scholars: Edwin Brobbey, Patrick Yeboah Bonsu, Gideon Owusu Boakye, Rosemond Nyatefe Tawiah, and Kwadwo Pobi Aning, bring with them a wealth of academic excellence, innovation, and a shared commitment to transforming healthcare across Africa.

Each scholar has demonstrated outstanding leadership and technical expertise in biomedical engineering and related fields:

  • Edwin Brobbey developed a phototherapy device for wound healing and has contributed to medical equipment integration at major healthcare facilities in Ghana.
  • Patrick Yeboah Bonsu specializes in prosthetics and orthotics, co-founding a startup focused on assistive technologies and exploring brain-computer interface applications.
  • Gideon Owusu Boakye engineered an assistive spoon for individuals with Parkinson’s disease, showcasing advanced skills in signal processing and embedded systems.
  • Rosemond Nyatefe Tawiah, founder of VitalNeoCare Health Innovations, is leading the development of neonatal monitoring devices for rural healthcare settings and has participated in global health innovation fellowships.
  • Kwadwo Pobi Aning, a computer engineer, created Ananse-AI, an AI-powered diagnostic platform that accelerates medical imaging analysis and improves access to radiological services in underserved communities.

Their diverse experiences and innovative approaches reflect the Mastercard Foundation’s goal of empowering young African leaders and align with the BME’s dedication to interdisciplinary education and global impact. We look forward to supporting their academic journey and contributions in the year ahead.
