COURSES to DEVELOP STRONG GRADUATE CONCEPTUAL and WRITING SKILLS
Understanding the Research Article: Reading Towards Writing (Divisions 3 and 4) is a 5-week course designed to help graduate students in the Physical Sciences and Life Sciences to improve their “Introduction-Methods-Results-Discussion” (IMRD) research article writing. The course will help students analyze the requirements and characteristics of this article format through lecture, class discussion, and close reading of articles drawn from representative fields of study. Prewriting: Strategies for Developing and Organizing Your Ideas is a 4-week course designed to help you synthesize scholarly literature and clarify the content and structure of your argument before you begin to write a draft. You will be introduced to a range of strategies for developing and organizing your ideas, from tech tools and spreadsheets to diagramming and Aristotle’s topics, strategies which you will be encouraged to integrate with your own learning style.

Writing: Conventions of Graduate Writing is a 5-week course that provides instruction on the disciplinary practices of understanding academic genres, integrating sources smoothly, developing an authorial presence to articulate your research contribution, building an effective writing structure, and developing your identity as a research writer. The course also offers the opportunity to meet individually with the instructor for feedback on a sample of your writing.

Revising: Achieving Flow and Clarity focuses on helping you become a better editor of your own work. Oral Presentation Skills is a 6-week course that helps you learn to develop and present polished, focussed presentations to your audience.
