Presentation Title: Effects of extracellular conductivity on action potential propagation.
Abstract: Neurons use action potentials, or spikes, to encode and transmit information. Understanding neural coding thus requires that we understand how spikes are generated and transmitted. In myelinated axons, spikes are transmitted rapidly and efficiently by regenerating the spikes at each node of Ranvier, a process known as saltatory conduction. Experimental and theoretical work have demonstrated that when an action potential propagates down an axon, it affects the extracellular electric field. As the extracellular electric field changes, it can affect both the active and nearby axons. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of extracellular medium on action potential propagation as well as the biophysical mechanism involved.
