Presentation Title: Effect of functional electrical stimulation on reactive balance in individuals with incomplete spinal cord injury
Abstract: Individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) are at high risk of falling, which causes devastating injuries and a significant burden on the Canadian healthcare system. Reactive balance training (RBT), a type of training where the participant is forced to take reactive steps repeatedly, is an effective intervention for preventing falls. We believe that incorporating functional electrical stimulation (FES) into RBT, termed RBT+FES, will improve reactive balance and prevent falls post-training compared to RBT alone. We are conducting a randomized controlled trial with 22 individuals with incomplete SCI, half assigned to the RBT and the other half to the RBT+FES training group. Specifically, we focus on performing biomechanical assessments of their reactive balance before and after the 6-week training using the motion capture system.
