Application deadlines
BME offers multiple admission rounds for each program. Because enrollment capacity decreases with each subsequent round, applicants are strongly encouraged to submit their complete application as early as possible. Domestic and international applicants follow the same set of deadlines. As applicants are often preparing for program entry in a future term, the admission timelines can sometimes be confusing. The information below outlines the application timelines, enrollment capacities, common application scenarios, and key considerations to help applicants better understand the admission cycle.
2026 Fall start: available for PhD, MASc, and MEng
| Admissions | Applications Open | Applications Close | Enrollment Capacity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round 1 | Nov. 1, 2025 | Feb. 28, 2026 | Normal |
| Round 2 | Mar. 1, 2026 | May 31, 2026 | Lower |
2027 Winter start: available for PhD and MASc
| Admissions | Applications Open | Applications Close | Enrollment Capacity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round 3 | Sep. 1, 2026 | Nov. 1, 2026 | Lowest |
Examples:
- An applicant targeting Fall 2026 entry to the MEng program should apply before the end of February 2026.
- An applicant targeting Winter 2026 entry to the PhD program must apply before the end of November 2025.
Considerations:
- Applications close at 5:00 p.m. ET on the published deadline.
- Admission offers will begin to be issued immediately following the close of Round 1.
- Whereas the MASc and PhD programs offer both Fall and Winter start dates, the MEng program always begins in the Fall term, as it is an accelerated one‑year program.
- International MEng applicants should apply by the February deadline to remain competitive.

MASc, PhD applicants
Research programs are thesis‑based, and students undergo training under the guidance of a faculty supervisor. Supervisors provide academic mentorship along with financial and professional support. Whereas applicants may apply at any time, successful candidates must identify and secure a BME faculty supervisor to receive admission.
- Find a BME supervisor from our core or cross-appointed faculty members
- After you have secured a supervisor, contact the BME Graduate Office to identify your supervisor. Copy your supervisor in the email to expedite communication and the admission process
- Review the MASc/PhD student handbook
- Apply for graduate scholarships (NSERC | CIHR | OGS)
