Five faculty members affiliated with the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at the University of Toronto have been promoted through the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, effective July 1, 2026. These promotions recognize their outstanding contributions to research, education, clinical innovation, and service across the biomedical engineering community.
The Discovery Grant program supports researchers exploring new frontiers to address critical challenges, including environmental protection, food security, and sustainable construction in cold climates. It seeks to sustain a diverse and high-quality research ecosystem in the natural sciences and engineering at Canadian universities, foster excellence, and create an engaging environment for research training.
Dr. Vasconcelos is one step closer to achieving that goal with a $3-million grant from the Stem Cell Network, a Canadian research funding organization. Her effort is one of 32 projects across the country that rose to the top in a competition for in the largest outlay of federal funding for regenerative medicine in 20 years.
Drs. Cristina Nostro and Sara Nunes Vasconcelos, with their postdoctoral fellow Dr. Yasaman Aghazadeh, have engineered a new method to improve the survival and potency of such cell transplants.
